VolunTourism is the idea of doing service work on vacation. VolunTourists spend a portion of their time volunteering and the rest as regular tourists. For many, this experience proves to be much more meaningful and enjoyable than a regular vacation. VolunTourism is also one of the most sustainable forms of tourism as it contributes directly to the local economy and, through projects, often helps the local environment and the local community. VolunTourists often leave with the knowledge and personal connections that are impossible to attain through traditional forms of tourism. At the same time, they have the chance to enjoy all the traditional activities such as going to the beach, surfing, exploring, hiking, etc…
We believe in the power of VolunTourism to bridge the gap between the developing and the developed worlds not only in terms of resources, but also in terms of understanding.
Our program is different from many others in that it is much more flexible and independent. Our volunteers can choose among numerous on-going projects or start one based on their own interest and skills. They can choose how much they want to volunteer and can customize their schedule for travel, surfing, or any other commitments they have during their time in Nicaragua. While we help to arrange activities, homestays, Spanish classes, and of course the projects, our volunteers are essentially independent travelers making their own decisions. We believe this flexibility allows out volunteers to thoroughly enjoy their trip instead of having to follow a program with a set schedule that might be less interesting. Most choose to volunteer only about 4 hours per day, but we can also accommodate people wishing to spend more of their time on their project.
